Gordon opposes proposal to have Duterte take over Customs

Senator Richard Gordon on Wednesday said he is not in favor of the proposal of the House of Representatives ways and means committee to grant President Rodrigo Duterte to take over the operations of the Bureau of Customs.

"I don't agree with that. He has more important things to do," Gordon said during the resumption of the Senate blue ribbon committee hearing on the "tara" system.

In an 82-page report, the House of Representatives Committee on Ways and Means has recommended granting Duterte emergency powers to take over BOC's operations.

"This Committee recommends that Congress grant the President emergency powers to immediately take over the operations of the Bureau in order to ensure public safety and security," the committee said.

The committee added that the granting of emergency powers to Duterte should be carefully studied, and may include privatization of certain departments or functions" of the BOC.
